Next phase of campaign on unclaimed assets launched 02/07/08

The Unclaimed Assets Charity Coalition has launched the next phase of its campaign to enable charities to access unclaimed assets that are rightfully theirs.

The activity will focus on establishing dialogue with large UK financial institutions to ascertain their current processes for reuniting individuals and organisations with their assets.

To support this activity, the Coalition is calling for charities to contact them for guidance and advice on approaching their own banks and any other relevant financial institutions they have links with.

Paul Farthing, Cancer Research UK’s director of legacies and Coalition spokesperson, said: “Unclaimed assets remain a significant source of lost income for charities throughout the UK.  It’s vital that we continue to take what action we can to enable us to access this revenue stream in an effective and straightforward manner.

“We are also keen to emphasise as part of this activity that unclaimed assets means all financial assets, not just bank and building society accounts.

“While many financial institutions are already taking steps to make this process easier, there remains a lot to be done before all institutions are operating at best practice level.”

The Unclaimed Assets Charity Coalition was set up in 2006 and the first phase of its activity has focused on improving tracing schemes available for unclaimed assets, and lobbying for amendments on the Dormant Accounts Bill, now in the House of Commons.
